What We Do

Major Activities

  • Administer and control all Authority-owned water management infrastructure including Gardiner, Qu'Appelle, Rafferty and Alameda Dams


  • Maintain an inventory of the quantity and quality of ground and surface water, and administer the allocation of water


  • Regulate and control the flow of water such as rivers, lakes, and reservoirs


  • Represent Saskatchewan in interprovincial and international water sharing agreements and other water management discussions


  • Approve water works for the maintenance and enhancement of water quality and availability, including approval and dispute resolution for the construction and operation of drainage works


  • Provide flood forecasting and identify flood susceptible areas


  • Promote the efficient use of water for environmental and socio-economic benefit


  • Undertake watershed studies and research and prepare evaluations of the state of watershed resources in the province


  • Manage watersheds to meet aquatic ecosystem and fish habitat needs


  • Develop and implement watershed protection plans through public consultation and in cooperation with local communities


  • Deliver various components of Saskatchewan's Safe Drinking Water Strategy


  • Provide assistance for erosion control, maintenance of channels, and maintenance of water control works


  • Coordinate implementation of waterfowl conservation programs in accordance with the North American Waterfowl Management Plan including preservation, management and development of breeding habitat
