In October 2009, well above normal precipitation occurred across the entire province. However, virtually no precipitation occurred in November. November was also warm and freeze-up did not occur until December.
In the mountain regions of Alberta, snowpack accumulations in the headwaters of the tributaries of the South Saskatchewan River (Old Man, Highwood, Elbow, Bow and Red Deer basins) are all well below normal (lower quartile).
In the headwater tributaries of the North Saskatchewan River, snowpack conditions are also below normal.
The Saskatchewan Watershed Authority acknowledges the assistance of Environment Canada for providing the climatological and hydrometric data used in this report. Snow survey data for the headwaters of the Saskatchewan River basin are supplied by Alberta Environmental Protection.
