Sturgeon Education in the Classroom
Schools in Saskatchewan are learning all about the Lake Sturgeon. As part of a provincial program,
the Saskatchewan Watershed Authority has teamed up with schools to raise and release a group of Lake Sturgeon
in Saskatchewan.
Watershed Authority fisheries biologist, Al Young, works with students and explains how they can help
Lake Sturgeons re-establish themselves in Canadian Waters. The idea, according to Young is to get the
kids to be more aware of the sturgeons, especially the problems with their populations.
Although sturgeon are not endangered at this time, the population has suffered heavy losses over the years
due to angling and pollution.
Schools in Hudson Bay, Lloydminster, Sandy Bay, Cumberland House, Prince Albert and North Battleford
have already participated in the program by raising small Lake Sturgeon in fish tanks for two to three
months before releasing them in the wild.
According to Al Young, the kids learn a lot about Lake Sturgeon and they seem to take ownership of them.
It creates an awareness of why it's important to keep our rivers clean.
